Best Philosophy Books

Take a look at this list of best philosophy books. If you think that my list is flawed or that there are some books that should be added to the list, let me know by commenting below. Let’s try to create the best list of best philosophy books together. (The list takes a minute to load.. please be patient: it will be up in a second).

What are the best philosophy books of all time? That’s a hard question. Many lists have been made; many scholars have long debated the issue; and writers have dedicated volumes to these great works in the history of human thought.

Experts usually include in the best philosophy books of all time works such as Plato’s Republic, Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics, Augstine’s Confessions, any of the Social Contract theories, Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason, Nietzsche’s Beyond Good and Evil, and so many more.

These merely name a few of the best philosophy books. One must too consider the works wrriten in the so-called “Post Modern” era(s), whether from the Anglo-Saxon world or Continental thinkers.

Still yet, I’ve merely named the best philosophy books in the Western Tradition. There’s a whole hemisphere of philosophy with which I am unfortunately too unfamiliar.

This site serves mainly to highlight the best philosophy books in the Western tradition. If you visit the blog, I have started a condensed history of philosophy, focusing in on each major philosopher in chronological order.

Also, each blog post will typically include both primary and secondary sources on each philosopher. Many of the Pre-Socratic philosophers will lack primary sources, in addition to a few others.

The best philosophy books require much analysis, attention to detail, and thorough contextual study. In light of this, I hope to briefly outline each philosopher, his time period, and his greatest contribution to the history of philosophy. This way, the reader can skim and choose articles, books, and links according to the reader’s particular philosophical interest.

Readers beware: my site does not attempt to name the best philosophy books, as if there were an absolute list. Rather, this site serves to offer suggestions and resources for the best philosophy books.
